A Small Business Owner’s Guide to Conducting Interviews

When you become a business owner, you have to do a lot of things you might not be comfortable with.

People often associate being an entrepreneur with being very social and extroverted, but that’s not always the case. That being said, a big part of running businesses is made easier when you possess these qualities. For instance, interviewing and hiring employees is easier if you’re comfortable asking important questions.

Today, we’re going to give you a hand in navigating the hiring process. This is our small business owner’s guide for conducting interviews. To get the best employees in the building to help grow your business, you need to be able to ask the right questions.

Start With Introductions

The best way for you to maintain a level of comfort between yourself and the interviewee is by keeping it light to start. Save the formalities for midway through the interview and try to actually get to know the person you’re speaking to.

At the end of the day, the person you hire needs to be qualified for the job, but they also need to fit into the workplace culture. You can get a good sense of the person, and vice versa, by keeping it as relaxed as possible.

Involve Other Team Members

One good way to take some of the pressure off of yourself is by involving other team members. Not only will it make you more comfortable, but it’ll actually allow the interview to move along at a faster pace.

It can be tough to get a sense of a candidate’s qualifications during a one-on-one interview. With more people there, you’ll have more questions and more observation on the answers.

Screen Well

Something that gets overlooked in the “interview process” is the way you actually screen candidates. Whether you’re using a hiring website or you put out an ad in the paper, make sure you do most of the searching before you actually hold interviews.

We understand that hiring can be stressful and time-consuming, so it might even be best for you to outsource your recruiting to a company that specializes in finding candidates, like the one here. If you’ve got great candidates coming in for interviews, you’ve already done most of the work and the interview process becomes much easier.

Have Written Questions and Take Notes

You always expect your top candidates to be prepared when they come in for the interview, but you also need to prepare if you’re going to successfully interview them. Work on your list of questions so that you’re getting the right information from the candidates and always take notes during the actual interview.

Conducting Interviews Shouldn’t Take Forever

With proper screening and good interview techniques, you should be able to find a great candidate quickly. If you’re not the interviewing type, you’ll want the process of conducting interviews over with quickly. That comes with the right preparation on your end.
