How Does a Door Bell Work?

07/18/2021 By Power Inception

The first electric doorbell was invented in 1831, meaning this technology’s been around for almost 200 years. With that being said, most people still don’t really know how a door bell works.

So how do door bells actually work? And what are the different types?

That’s what we’re here to look at today. Read on to find out more about how different types of door bells work here.

The Two Main Types

When it comes to door bells, the two most commonly used types are wired and wireless door bells. One works using electromagnetic force while the other leverage batteries and other forms of power.

How a Wired Door Bell Works

Wired door bells, often referred to as chime door bells, usually have two different metal bars that make two different musical notes when hit. There are also batteries and an electromagnet along with a freely moving hammer.

When a door bell is pressed, the electromagnet magnetizes the metal hammers. This causes the hammer to hit metal and create the “ding” sound. Once the bell is released, the hammer is released and sent the other way.

This causes the “dong” sound, which might sound familiar to you at this point. Wired door bells are still common in many homes and buildings and might stick around for a long time given their accessibility.

How a Wireless Door Bell Works

In contrast, a wireless door bell doesn’t have as complicated of a system as its wired counterparts. As you might guess, wireless door bells use batteries to power a wireless sound system.

When a button is pressed, a wireless door bell emits a radio signal. This is picked up by a receiver and triggers the door bell to give off sound and light.

The receiver is usually mounted to the wall somewhere inside your house, powered by a battery. These door bells often emit different frequencies so you don’t disturb your neighbors.

Which Ones Should You Choose?

Whether you pick a wired or wireless door bell is really up to your preferences.

Wired door bells are usually the cheaper option and bring that distinct sound that’ll alert you and your whole house whenever there’s a guest. They’re also extremely reliable and have consistent performance.

On the other hand, wired door bells can certainly break on basically zero notice. Installing them can be a challenge and their range isn’t always the best.

Wired door bells are pricier but offer many benefits. They’re easy to install and changing batteries every now and then is a breeze. Their overall range is also much wider.

Modern wireless door bells also come with LED lights and other additions to make them more dynamic in their use. Intercoms are also available to chat with your visitors before letting them in.

All in all, a wireless door bell is a more effective option if you’re looking for a new door bell. Those interested in investing in door bells, particularly for their businesses, should see here for some great options.
