How Long Does a MacBook Last on Average?

11/21/2020 By Power Inception

In 2018, 51% of Mac users were new to the platform as a whole. Apple attracts all people with their MacBooks because they are made with quality materials and are worth the money. However, it is uncommon to mention the lifespan of a MacBook.

If you are wondering about the life of a MacBook, read on to find out the answer to, “how long does a MacBook last?”

How Long Does a MacBook Last?

The high price of an Apple computer makes the question, “how long does a MacBook last?”, a common one. People want to understand a MacBook lifespan so they can avoid replacing it for as long as possible.

It is important to consider the age of the MacBook and how often you experience issues with it. Random shutdowns and degraded batteries are just ways of letting you know your Mac is on its last leg. There will come a point in time where repairing a Mac won’t be an option, instead, you will have to replace it.

Mac Replacement Indicators

The life of a MacBook can be hard to figure out, but there are indicators that mean you need a replacement. You can look for signs like:

  • Apple not supporting the latest software version leaving you vulnerable
  • The apps needed can’t run on the computer
  • The MacBook struggling to perform certain tasks like updates
  • A break is too expensive to fix or the parts are no longer made
  • The MacBook tends to be unreliable

These are the most common indicators that can occur at different times during the average lifespan of a MacBook Pro. Your MacBook shutting down unexpectedly should not be a common thing. This is the main way to tell if you need a replacement.

How Long Should a MacBook Pro Last?

The MacBook Pro is the most common of the Macs that people own. Generally, a MacBook lifespan is around eight years. This is the same for every type of MacBook created.

However, this time span depends on a number of factors. The life of a MacBook is based on if Apple provides spare parts for their versions still. Apple won’t provide parts for computers that are older than seven years.

In some cases, the company will not provide parts for versions that have not been made for more than five years. This means if you have one of the older versions of a MacBook Pro and come across an issue, you may not be able to get the necessary parts to fix it.

This is especially important to consider if you buy a second-hand MacBook. If the version has not been manufactured for years, there is a chance it won’t be worth your money. It will also depend on how long the person before you has had it.

Make Your MacBook Last

If you properly take care of your MacBook, it has a better chance of lasting longer than the general eight years. If you run across an issue with your MacBook, you can try to get it fixed before jumping to a replacement. Knowing when you need a replacement is key, so follow this guide when you run into issues.
